Wife bartering a primitive affair

‘The night was filled with unbelievable screams of medieval memories of bloody lashings of human body. Apparently Jane had lost her memory of that particular night, and what had happened after they’d settled at home after the dinner party. Her lifeless body was lying on a bed at the Intensive Care Unit of the Nairobi Women Hospital in Nairobi.’

‘This is a terrible condition of course; we need not keep quiet about it,’ I said. Anyway, he hadn’t attempted to conceal the fact that he bartered his wife and tears were rolling over his cheek like a big baby. ‘Or was it just an act of pretense to show remorse. after realizing the law was almost catching up with him.’  .. God in heaven!’ I murmured. ‘Why doesn’t he get the hell out? Now, before he lands himself into more trouble with his in-laws who knew that he was involved. They were trickling in one by one by the hour.

You see, he loves her so much, but the events of last night left everyone baffled. What the matter had gone into his head no one can tell. And then he turned to face me as if he wanted an answer from me. I knew he had deserted the police force because he couldn’t stand his own hot temperament which was a disadvantage to his career. He was pleading with me, trying to persuade me that he did not know what he was doing at the time.

‘I thought he wasn’t that bad to have committed the bartering, but now I developed second thoughts. And to end up in prison was the only option for him. Later in the day two police men came and whisked him out of the hospital in the presence of some Gender based human rights activists. What happened next is for you and me to guess.

What the laws say
‘’ All human beings are born free, and are equal and that all persons are entitled to recognition and respect for their dignity.’’
The constitution of Kenya strongly prohibits human rights abuses and gender violence. Chapter four of the bill of rights paragraph 27 clause (3) stipulates that women and men have the right to equal treatment, including the right to equal opportunities in political, economic, cultural and social spheres.

In paragraph 29, Every person has the right to freedom and security of the person, which includes the right not to be subjected to any form of violence from either public or private sources; subjected to torture in any manner, whether physical or psychological; treated or punished in a cruel, inhuman or degrading manner.
Despite the extent of gender violations or wife bartering against women, these abuses are rarely reported due to the likelihood of reprisals by some members of the extended family. As a result, gender human rights violations against the women remain under-reported and undocumented.

The changing society
Due to the ever changing society some women end up learning the hard way. They have started adopting domineering attributes which were traditionally reserved for men. This not because they envisage to do so, it is because the men have started becoming carefree absconding most of their duties and responsibilities. This puts man in a vulnerable situation of starting to reclaim his lost esteem and thus a major conflict arises.
However, Gender equality is a noble course that only seeks to create balances that if handle well are going to encourage development both at family and government levels,
